Interdisciplinary Leadership

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

The Interdisciplinary Leadership doctoral program is based in the liberal arts where graduates of the program leave with the knowledge, values, and skills to be strong leaders. The program aims to create insightful and ambitious leaders across a wide array of fields such as business, education, communications, healthcare, non-profit organizations, or government entities. The EdD is an applied/practical degree as opposed to more theory-based PhD. Students will learn to be ethical leaders who can think critically, solve complex problems, communicate effectively, and work with diverse populations. The degree has two specializations: Organizational Leadership and Educational Leadership.

Admission Requirements

An applicant’s file will be reviewed by the EdD admissions committee to determine the suitability for the program. The following materials are required for admission:

  1. An earned master’s degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
  2. Official transcripts from a regionally accredited masters program.
  3. Resume or curriculum vitae.
  4. Personal statement indicating why you are applying to the program. Include a dissertation topic you may want to pursue.
  5. Writing sample from a previous academic program.

In addition to the above admissions criteria, international applicants (not living in the U.S.) must provide proof of English proficiency by submitting the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) taken within the past two years. TOEFL IBT minimum score of 80; TOEFL PBT minimum score of 550; TOEFL CBT minimum score of 213.

Note: a maximum of six doctoral credit hours may be transferred from other accredited universities (SACSCOC or the equivalent).

Academic Probation & Dismissal

Interdisciplinary Leadership students must maintain a graduate GPA of at least 3.0. No graduate course in which a grade below a ‘C’ is earned may be applied toward the completion of the degree.

If a student’s cumulative graduate GPA falls below 3.0 or if the student has a grade of ‘D’ or ‘F’ in any Interdisciplinary Leadership class, the student will be placed on academic probation. If, during the probationary semester, the student’s cumulative graduate GPA is raised to at least 3.0, without a ‘D’ or ‘F’ in any graduate class, the student may be removed from academic probation. If, at the conclusion of the probationary semester, the student fails to achieve a cumulative graduate GPA of at least 3.0, the student will be dismissed from the program.

Students dismissed from the program may appeal the dismissal to the Education Admissions Committee whose decision is final. The written statement of appeal should detail reasons why circumstances of the case warrant special consideration. If the appeal is denied, one semester must elapse before the student may apply for readmission.

Readmission

A student who withdrew from the graduate education program or who was dismissed from the program may reapply under the current catalog. Readmission is not guaranteed and is considered on a case-by-case basis by the Education Admissions Committee.
